Ottoview: An Interactive Approach to Training Truck Drivers to Reduce Idling and Emissions

Persen Technologies Inc. (PERSENTECH), a leading innovator of data logging systems and solutions, is providing Ottoview Vehicle Data Loggers to the Trucking Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) to support their new SmartDriver for Highway Trucking (SDHT) course that tracks and collects information relating to fuel use and CO2 emissions. The driver and instructor also receive real-time visual and audible feedback on speed, acceleration, fuel economy and emissions that help identify pre-and post-training improvements in fuel-saving practices that will also reduce CO2 emissions. SDHT is a training program developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Office of Energy Efficiency to promote the fuel-efficient operation of heavy duty transport trucks.

It provides drivers with the information and practical knowledge they need to achieve first-rate fuel-efficiency under a wide range of driving conditions. PERSENTECH’s highly innovative VDL50 technology was adopted for this project given its ease of installation, portability, on-screen real-time feedback, and the summary reporting available by collecting various truck performance parameters. Crossroads Training Academy, located in Kingston Ontario, is one of the first truck training schools to use the Ottoview devices in the course. Robert Barclay, TTSAO’s Vice President, believes that “Ottoview captures the real-time data we are looking for in terms of fuel management, and it also provides our trainers with a very valuable teaching aid for our students”.
PERSENTECH’s products and services are used in various transportation studies and vehicle-use surveys including Transport Canada’s Canadian Vehicle Use Study deployed nation-wide. The innovations include ease-of-installation, portability to move the device from vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-tracking and reporting solutions, smart phone applications, and street level map data for Location Based Services (LBS). The VDL50 multi-protocol logger in particular, can be used with both light and heavy-duty vehicles and provides visual and audible trip information including fuel-use and CO2 emissions.

Through the SmartDriver program, TTSAO envisions cooperation and joint efforts of all truck training schools and the trucking industry itself to set specific standards regarding trucking emissions and driver behavior. One of its main concerns is ensuring that all drivers entering the trucking field maintain a minimum level of knowledge and ability consistent not only with the needs of their employers, but also for the safety of the general public and environment.

OttoMobilePro iOS8 Release

The OttoMobile Pro iPhone app has been updated to iOS8 standards. Several new features have been added including CSV reporting, map update notification, and independent volume control.

The OttoMobile Pro application provides audible alerts for speeding, school zones and other community safe areas, and also logs trip statistics including mileage and location. Ten position points are stored when the application is being used with the OttoHeartbeat functionality. This provides for real-time tracking and reporting.

TAC-2014 OTSS Launch

Persen Technologies Inc. (PERSENTECH) will be presenting its latest innovation, the Otto Travel Study Solution (OTSS), at the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) conference and exhibition in Montreal, Quebec.

Otto Travel Study Solution (OTSS) enables better decision making in transportation planning using richer data from multi-modal data sources. OTSS also allows consultants and practitioners to automate the travel survey process and provides a capability to do better research with better outcomes using more reliable and accurate data collection and data management methods.

Stop by our booth for a demonstration and presentation of OTSS.

  • Sunday September 28th: 17:00 to 20:00
  • Monday September 29th: 11:00 to 16:00
  • Tuesday September 30th: 08:00 to 16:00

TRB-2015 OTSS Demo

Persen Technologies Inc. (PERSENTECH) will be exhibiting and presenting the Otto Travel Study Solution (OTSS) at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) conference and exhibition in Washington, D.C, U.S.A., from January 11-15, 2015.

OTSS includes a family of Otto-branded logging devices, smartphone applications, and a centralized data repository. The OTSS automated solution complements or replaces many of the traditional labour-based methods. In addition to increased productivity, the use of OTSS delivers many benefits including: enriched data quality; reduction of participant burden; multi-day data collection; the ability to study more in-depth aspects of travel behavior and transportation alternatives; and the optimization of sample size and survey costs.

Stop by our booth for a demonstration and presentation of OTSS.

  • Sunday January 11: 16:00 to 19:00
  • Monday January 12: 9:30 to 16:00
  • Tuesday January 13: 9:30 to 16:00
